Karmenu Vella has gotten the green light from the environment and fisheries committees in the European Parliament. Green MEPs were however concerned by Vella's refusal to make specific commitments on reform and legislation.

A report has brought to light the lack of planning and monitoring that led to July's Skolasajf fiasco, which forced the program to start several days late due to a shortage of teaching staff. Foundation of Educational Services Roderick Agius was blamed for misleading the board on the gravity of the situation.

Students of the ICT institute at MCAST have been asked to bring their personal laptops to class and to buy particular software. Students have to face bigger classes, shorter lessons and a staff shortage at the Paola campus, which is still undergoing renovations.

Transport minister Joe Mizzi said yesterday that he was confident that there were areas around the Maltese Islands that could be exploited for petroleum in commercial quantities. Although past efforts were fruitless, he said, the government hopes to increase its activities in the search for natural resources.

A detailed report by Amnesty International has raised questions about the role Malta and Italy played in the deaths of 270 migrants off Lampedusa in October last year. The report called for an independent inquiry and questionned whether the two countries acted quickly enough and with all their available resources to save those lives.
