Government imposes fines for parliament building delays

Statement describes project as 'haphazard, badly planned, over budget and overdue'

Government has announced that BIB Joint Venture, the contractors working on the construction of the new Parliament building, will be facing 'delay damages' starting from today.

The fines come following the failure of the contractors to meet contractual deadlines.

In a dig at the previous administration, the government said that it is "taking infrastructural projects of this calibre seriously" and announced that “this is the new way this government is handling the project, which it found to be haphazard, badly planned, over budget and past its deadline.”

The amount of the fines was not mentioned in the announcement.

Later today, the House Business Committee will be updated on the project’s progress by the Grand Harbour Rehabilitation Corporation so as to be able to set a date for relocating parliament to the new building.
