Maltese museums welcome over two million people

Maltese musuems generated a total of €9.4 million in 2013, an increase of 9.5% when compared to 2012

Around 2.2 million people visited Malta and Gozo’s 64 museums and historical sites in 2013, according to a national survey. This is an increase of 9.9% from 2012.

Income from admissions generated by museums and historical sites in 2013 reached €9.4 million - an average of €146,483 per site. This resulted in an increase of 9.5% in income from admissions compared to the 2012 levels. Paid admissions accounted for 92.0% of total admissions during the same year.
In 2013, nearly a quarter of all museums and historical sites consisted of Monuments and Sites. These were followed by Ethnology and Anthropology museums and Archaeology and History museums.
Art museums and Monuments and Sites both had the highest proportion of admissions, with 31.0% of total admissions each. Archaeology and History museums followed with 24.7%.
In 2013, 40.6% of the museums and historical sites were managed by the state, while 31.3% were managed by voluntary or non-profit organisations. The rest were either run by the Church or by a private enterprise for profit.
