Environment Minister Leo Brincat held his first meeting with the European Commissioner for Environment Karmenu Vella in Brussels.

The two discussed the direction that the European Commission should take in the coming years over the environment and sustainable development.

“The European Union must increase its standards over air quality and waste without hindering competitiveness. If this is done, the EU could help increase new jobs instead of harming existent ones. The EU must increase its efforts to ensure that the member states meet their targets,” Brincat said during a meeting for environment ministers.

He said, that the national agenda of member states should focus on meeting the EU 2020 strategy on sustainable development.

Brincat also met the European Commissioner for climate and energy Miguel Arias Canete.
