[WATCH] People speak out on whether Christmas drink-driving campaigns yield results

People give their opinions on the annual Christmastime drink-drive warning campaigns and about whether they prefer to buy Christmas presents from shops or online

People in Valletta took time out from their last-minute Christmas shopping to speak to MaltaToday about their opinions on the annual festive drink-driving warning campaigns, with the majority only having positive things to say about them.

“You often hear about groups of youths going out and one of them staying sober while the others drink,” one man said. “I think the campaigns have an effect on people.”

“The campaigns do have an effect and I want to emphasise this point so that people become conscious of the dangers of drink-driving," another man said. "It’s very important, because drink-driving could cause problems to both the driver and other people.”
“They have an effect on me,” a young woman said. “I don’t believe in drinking and driving, especially at this time of year.

“They don’t effect me, because I don’t drink,” a woman said. “However, it’s very important to emphasise the dangers of drink-driving because a lot of such tragedies occur during this festive period.

“They have an effect on me,” a young woman said. “I don’t believe in drinking and driving, especially at this time of year."

However, two other young women were less optimistic.
“I think the campaigns do make some people watch out, but at the end of the day, people do the first thing that comes into their heads," she said. "The decision not to drink-drive must come from you."

“The campaigns will have some sort of effect on you, because they make you think a bit more about the dangers of drink-driving," her friend said. "However, at the end of the day, the decisions you make depend on you.”

They were also asked whether they are going to buy their Christmas presents from shops or online, with the majority claiming that they were buying them from shops.

“I buy some of my presents online, but I buy the majority of them from shops,” a man said.

“I much prefer going around the shops, because that way you get to feel the spirit of Christmas and it’s much nicer trying things on,” a woman said. “Also, I can’t chance it online. You don’t know what the quality of the items you're buying is like."
