Transport Malta workers removed traffic bollards from two roundabouts on Triq San Balal between Naxxar and San Gwann.

The bollards, that had been installed on 20 December, had effectively prevented drivers approaching Naxxar from San Gwann from turning right at the two roundabouts. Such drivers who wanted to enter the Birguma bypass had to therefore turn around at the second roundabout on the road, the one adjoining Triq il-Parrocca.

Transport Malta’s decision led to long traffic jams of around four kilometres and irate commuters took to social media to complain, with one driver claiming to have spent an hour in traffic.

Commuters told MaltaToday that the decision to carry out the works on a Saturday morning was in itself irresponsible and that the closure of the two roundabouts did not make any sense.

The traffic congestion in the area had been blamed on the opening of the McDonald’s drive-through service. However, it now transpires that the two-lane road simply cannot sustain the large number of private cars crossing the road every day.
