UHM secretary-general protests minister's 'no mobile' policy

UHM secretary Josef Vella was forced to cancel a meeting with Home Affairs Minister Carmelo Abela after he refused to give up his mobile before the meeting was held.

According to the union, Vella was asked to hand in his mobile before he went in to meet the Minister.

A shocked Vella said he was never treated in this manner whenever he met other Cabinet members, including the Prime Minister. He said the request to leave him mobile behind offended and humiliated him.

“This is definitely not the way to treat social partners,” he said, adding that such behaviour reflected the government’s lack of trust in the union.
