Malta must develop a culture of entrepreneurship, Labour MEP Miriam Dalli said.

“We need to expose our children to a culture of entrepreneurship from a young age,” Dalli said at the start of a conference in Brussels that was attended by 24 Maltese youths. “We cannot introduce better entrepreneurship in the country by simply introducing new legislation. The subject needs to be taught from a young age, not only in schools but also through extra-curricular programmes.”

She said that alternatives must be made available for people whose start-up businesses fail.

“We need to assist young people who are ready to take risks and develop a new, innovative idea into a fresh successful business,” Dalli said. “Just because a business may not be initially successful, this does not mean that entrepreneurs should give up.”

She pointed out that many start-up businesses face financial obstacles and argued in favour of alternatives such as business angles, crowd funding and unity between established businesses and new, innovative entrepreneurs.
