Youth Guarantee 'major contributor' to Malta's low unemployment figures

A total of 1,851 youths benefitted from the government's Youth Guarantee last year, with the figure expected to reach 3,000 by the end of this year.

Prime minister Joseph Muscat and minister for education Evarist Bartolo were addressing a press conference this morning at the Maltapost offices, a company that currently employs 16 youths as one of the Youth Guarantee's main partners.

463 youths, between 16 and 25 years of age, have taken part in the NEETs (Not in Education, Employment or Training) programme, aimed at supporting them in finding productive work or an appropriate training programme to suit their needs.

These initiatives, said Muscat, contributed to the creation of jobs and Malta's unemployment rate being the third lowest in Europe and the fifth lowest in youth unemployment.
