Labour slams ‘disastrous’ state of Mosta roads

PL executive secretary questions why Mosta mayor had hidden a 2012 report on Mosta roads

The Labour Party have accused the PN-majority Mosta local council of leaving 90 roads in a "disastrous state".

“These roads, located in zones such as tal-Wej, Santa Margerita and Sant’ Andrija, have all been left out of a report compiled by MP&DC, a company owned by the husband of Mosta’s mayor Shirley Farrugia,” PL executive secretary Lydia Abela told a press conference, adding that Farrugia herself is a shareholder of this company.

She said that, because of these shortcomings, the central government had to carry out works on 11 streets in Mosta itself. She questioned why Farrugia had kept the report hidden in her office and why the executive secretary couldn’t find it in the local council’s building.

Local Government Minister Owen Bonnici accused the PN-majority local council of trying to mislead Parliament by providing them a 2009 report on Mosta roads instead of a 2012 report that had been requested of them by an MP.

“When the story broke, the council’s acting executive secretary tried to hide behind the parliamentary question’s semantics and confirmed that the 2012 report compiled by Farrugia’s company wasn’t available at the local council,” Bonnici said.
