Despite a 2012 comment by Joseph Muscat, then head of the Opposition, that former PM Lawrence Gonzi would be called up to open the new parliament building - a "monument to extravagance" - the President will be presiding over the ceremony on 4 May.

The executive of the Malta Olympic Committee had turned down an invitation to meet with Opposition leader Simon Busuttil last year, before a Maltese contingent was to travel to Glasgow in summer of last year.

The expropriation process has begun to transfer ownership of Villa Guardamangia, residence of Queen Elizabeth, then princess, and her husband between 1949 and 1951, to the government in order to begin restoration works.

A marriage in Malta where one of the parties transitions to the opposite sex will not automatically be dissolved. As civil unions are legal, the marriage would only be annulled if the couple can prove that its marriage obligations are not being met.
