6 TV crew members found dead in Libya

The Nationalist Party has called for an urgent meeting of the permanent committee of economic and financial affairs

Opposition MPs Claudio Grech and Kristy Debono have asked for an urgent meeting of the permanent committee on economic and financial affairs in light of the latest developments in Libya.

The Associated Press has reported that six crew members from a private TV network were found dead, eight months after they were abducted in Libya.

Hatem al-Aribi, a Libyan government official told the Associated Press that the bodies were found on Monday in Bayda - the temporary home of Libya's internationally-recognized government.

The capital of Libya, Tripoli, was overrun last year by militias allied with Islamist factions. These militias then set up their own government and revived the previous parliament and the elected parliament now meets in the eastern city of Tobruk which has an executive branch that operates from nearby Bayda.

Al-Aribi says that the six, from the Barqa TV network, were abducted in August while travelling to their hometown of Ajdabiya after covering the opening of the parliament in Tobruk.

The opposition stressed in a statement that it believes the current situation for Maltese people with commercial interests in Libya is one of particular concern and it requires immediate attention.

The statement reads that the opposition had already issued two other proposals to strengthen and safeguard jobs in local companies that operate in Libya.

“Politicians need to act at this particular moment and not remain passive and the opposition is being as proactive as possible.”
