The Nationalist Party has said that it agrees with any foreign investment in the education sector as long as it benefits all society.

“In light of the announcement this morning, the party believes there are basic principles that every government should stick to,” PN said in a statement issued earlier today.

“The government should give all the details of the project including what Maltese assets, foreign businessmen will be acquiring.”

The party also maintained that although it is in favour of new investments in the education sector, they should ensure that no discriminations with private entities already offering these services are created.

“The government should not only ensure the sustainability and viability of the University of Malta, MCAST and ITS but it should also ensure that these institutions are placed in a good enough position to develop and maintain their high standards,” the statement reads adding that this can only happen if institutions are given more autonomy in their work.

In their statement the party also said that the project needed to be economically and socially sustainable and that public land or land classified as out of development should not be considered for the project.

“Public land should be used by public entities not be given to foreign investors to make money off it,” PN pointed out saying that if this happens, it would be discriminatory towards private land owners that choose to build educational institutions.
