Potato and Agrarian Festival to be held in Qrendi

The Qrendi local council is holding its annual Potato and Agrarian Festival on Sunday 31st May

The Qrendi local council will be organising the Potato and Agrarian Festival at Qrendi In collaboration with the Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government, and The Malta Tourism Authority.

The annual potato festival, now in its fourth year, shall take place between 9am and 7pm on Sunday 31st May 2015 at the Ġnien tal-Warda in Qrendi. It is being organised by the Qrendi Local Council together with the local potato harvesters and exporters and the local musical societies.

The “Ġnien tal-Kmand” built in the early nineteen century by the British Governor General, Sir Alexander Ball, with the aim of potato crop experimentation is going to be open to the general public. Potatoes were in high demand in order to feed the numerous British soldiers stationed in Malta at the time.

“The day’s event, based on the harvesting of the Potato species, an exhibition of modern and past machinery used for its cultivation, its use in the Maltese tradition and modern dishes, shall also feature numerous other activities aimed to address all family members,” a statement issued by the local council explained.

Visitors at the festival are once again being given the opportunity to savour the beauty of the village of Qrendi, through regular trips aboard the Vintage Bus, that shall take its passengers as far as the Neolithic temples of Ħaġar Qim, and where with the kind assistance of Heritage Malta, access to the Temples is going to be given against a donation of €1 all day long.

Throughout the morning activities, an exhibition by the Malta Police Force Dog’s section is on from 10:30am onwards, where enthusiasts can appreciate traditional Maltese Folklore Music, “Għana” at its finest through the talent of  lead guitarist Ġorġ Żabliġon and friends.

Bird lovers are being allowed the privilege to learn more on Birds of Prey at the Sharp Sight Falconry stand, where commemorative photographs may be taken with these majestic birds and their handler.

Culinary dishes having potatoes as their main ingredient, will be prepared by the Qrendi musical societies along with Qrendi FC Nursery.

Once again, the now established and popular, “Qrendi Potato Ice Cream” produced by Euro Caterers is being made available following the large demand during last year’s fextival.

Potato races, sack races, shall feature in the “Kids Area” amongst other games and activities.

Musical Entertainment complemented by the dancing talents of the younger generation shall highlight these activities. Malta’s established Country Brothers together with the cast of Klassi Għalina are going to warm-up the audience in preparation for the performance of Malta’s representative at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest, Amber.
