President pays surprise visit to Alive cyclists

President of the Republic Marie Louise Coleiro Preca visits cycling team currently training for a cycling challenge for cancer.

President Marie Louise Coleiro Preca paid a surprise visit to a group of 47 cyclists and a back-up team who is currently training for a cycling challenge for cancer.

The cyclists were on their last training session before departing for Liechtenstein on July 9, to participate in the Daikin ALIVE2015 Cycling Challenge for Cancer – a gruelling challenge across seven countries in seven days that will finish in Sutton, UK on July 18.

The ALIVE team is raising funds, which will be facilitated through the University of Malta Research Trust (RIDT), to finance a Ph.D. student in cancer research for children. The student will join other researchers led by Senior Lecturer Dr Pierre Schembri Wismayer from the University of Malta Department of Anatomy of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery and the Department’s Head Dr Jean Calleja Agius.

The visit was also attended by University of Malta Pro Rector for Research and Innovation Professor Richard Muscat and RIDT CEO Wilfred Kenely.

“Your support and dedication will further boost our spirits. Our aspiration is to make our third cycling challenge a success and to raise as much money as possible for an extremely worthy cause,” ALIVE Charity Foundation President Nicky Camilleri said.
