Parliament urged to change animal welfare laws, introduce animal CSI
Animal rights NGO calls on government to set proper criteria in place when employed animal welfare offices

Animal Guardians Malta, an NGO focusing on animal rights, has urged parliamentarians to support a petition presented to the Animal Welfare Council calling for protection for animals.
The petition calls for an urgent reform of the animal welfare laws; the introduction of serious criteria by which animal welfare officers are chosen and the introduction of animal CSI.
According to the NGO, too “much foot dragging has been going on, and the general belief among people who respect animals, is that our MP's do not really care about the well-being of animals.
“Laws need to be introduced to provide teeth to the Animal Welfare Department and its officers who presently are without any legal strength against many forms of animal neglect, abuse and cruelty, which is quite common in Malta.”
The Animal Guardian said that animal welfare officers should be chosen properly: “This is a job which, like a nurse or teacher, entails the necessity of being totally dedicated to your job and have the love for animals. We believe that persons who apply to work in this area should at least have a proven track record with recommendations of love and experience of working with animals.”
The NGO also said that introducing Animal CSI to Malta would facilitate court cases against animal cruelty: “A vet's detailed medical report would provide the much needed backup in court cases.”
Animal Guardian Malta said it has encouraged politicians to take part in the petition following the popular support the NGO is receiving.

Many many animals are suffering daily, and we cannot rescue them, or bring their abusers to Justice. Our country can show that it does respect and care for animals. Thousands of people who respect animals are appalled by our present disastrous system, where animals are NOT protected at all !!
