Government calls for proposals for transport system to connect harbour areas

The proposals will need to outline the design and operation of a transport system that does not use road vehicles

The government, through Projects Malta, has issued a request for proposals for transport projects that would connect the Grand Harbor with Marsamxett, without the use of road vehicles.

The call is part of the government’s efforts to offer commuters alternative transport solutions to and from this busy area.

Projects Malta Ltd said that the project would decrease waiting times and traffic. The project will be financed through Public Private Parternship.

Data from the National Statistics Office about the last quarter of 2014 shows that there are 335,249 licensed vehicles on the road. 49% of the islands population is concentrated around the Port area.

Transport minister Joe Mizzi said that the government is eager to support projects that reduce dependency on private vehicles and it was the government’s ultimate goal to reduce vehicles on the road as well as the resultant traffic and air pollution.

Interested parties are requested to submit their ideas for design, construction and operation of new transport routes that would benefit the local economy.
