Over 60% of elderly citizens have a tallinja concession card

63,000 senior citizens have a public transport service card

63,000 senior citizens have a tallinja card, according to the Malta Public Transport. The figure represents over 60% of the population aged over 60.

“This is considered as a major milestone that forms an integral part of the plan to change the culture of bus ticketing in Malta,” the service provider said.

“It is also an important indicator of the mobility of elderly people who benefit from reduced fares of 25c per journey and from a maximum capping of 50c per day and €2 per week for unlimited travel in Malta and Gozo.”

MPT said this was further improved with the introduction of 142 new low-floor buses which ensure a step-free access to the bus thus reducing the effort required to board the bus.

The last batch of 62 buses will arrive next week with the aim of being put into service by mid-September.

As of Thursday 1 October, Malta Public Transport will be stopping the temporary 30c concession fare which was kept available on the bus as a transition for holders of a Kartanzjan/60+ Maltese Identity Card and holders of a Special ID and also for Children when paying in cash on the bus. As of this date, only the €2.00 ticket will be available for purchase in cash on the bus.
