As of 2016, non-governmental organisations need to be registered with the Commissioner for Voluntary Organisations to benefit from funds distributed by the Malta Community Chest Fund.

President of the Republic Marie Louise Coleiro Preca announced that this will be the last year during which money from the Voluntary Organisations Fund will also be given to unregistered NGOs.

During a press conference on Saturday morning, Coleiro Preca announced the 38 NGOs that will benefit from the fund. The NGOs were chosen following a rigorous evaluation process, which included a period for appeals.

A total of 98 NGOs had applied.

Coleiro Preca added that an agreement was reached with Archbishop Charles Scicluna and Gozo Bishop Mario Grech that all NGOs should be registered.

“Church organisations do a lot of good to society and it is important that they register their NGOs,” Coleiro Preca said.

The President spoke of the importance of a transparent and accountable process for the distribution of funds.
