European Council president Donald Tusk and European Parliament president Martin Schulz will address the Maltese parliament on 10 November.

Speaking in parliament, prime minister Joseph Muscat announced that the two leaders had accepted his invitation to address the local parliament ahead of the Valletta Summit, to speak about the European refugee crisis.

He added that European Commission president Jean Claude Juncker had turned down his invitation, as he had other commitments on that day.

“This will be a unique experience, and will probably be the first time that the European Council president and European Parliament president will address a local parliament,” Muscat said.

The announcement was praised by both Speaker Anglu Farrugia and Opposition leader Simon Busuttil.
