She has been the leader of the Commonwealth for more than 60 years, so it came at no surprise when the Queen joked about Canada’s 43-year-old Prime Minister Justin Trudeau making her feel “so old”.

During a banquet held at the Corinthia Hotel last night, Trudeau made a toast to the 89-year-old monarch, during which he reminded her that he was the 12th Canadian prime minister to serve during her reign.

“Thank you for making me feel so old,” the Queen quipped.

In a tweet, the newest – but not the youngest Commonwealth leader – ever so gallantly replied: “On the contrary, you are forever young. I was honoured to toast your lifetime of service tonight.”

Queen Elizabeth said she was grateful to be with the Commonwealth leaders for a second CHOGM hosted by Malta, expressing hope that the occasion would allow the leaders “to gather as friends and enjoy Malta's hospitality”.

Wearing the Grand Duchess Vladimir tiara with emerald drops, complimented with a Garter Star and the Delhi Durbar necklace, the Queen was greeted at the banquet by Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon; Sir John Major, chairman of the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust, and outgoing Commonwealth secretary-general Kamalesh Sharma.

Accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall, they then greeted every national leader in turn.
