The room at Mount Carmel hospital, in which a 45-year-old Briton was being detained when he hanged himself, was equipped with a CCTV camera. The man was being held in the Forensics Unit after being arrested on drug-related offences on New Year's Eve. The home affairs ministry said an internal as well as magisterial inquiry were underway.

The PN reiterated its call for the removal of Ian Borg from his post as parliamentary secretary. Deputy leader Beppe Fenech Adami said that PM Joseph Muscat's New Year message included a pledge to fight corruption and removing Borg would be in line with that.

Eurostat data show that Malta has the highest rate of employment for graduates of post-secondary and tertiary education. 96.2% of graduates are employed, outranking Germany, the UK and Sweden.

The Maltese are more likely to donate money and goods than their time, a Charities Aid Foundation study in 2015 showed. There has however been an increase in volunteering.
