University of Malta rectorship: race is on between Godfrey Baldacchino, Alfred Vella

Academics Godfrey Baldacchino and Alfred Vella are the two candidates for UoM rectorship

The choice for the University of Malta’s new rector will fall between academics Godfrey Baldacchino and Alfred Vella, when the election takes place later this month.

A few names have been bandied out, including head of the international relations department Carmen Sammut and Tanya Sammut-Bonnici, who currently heads the Marketing Department of the Faculty of Economics.

However, the only two names submitted were those of Baldacchino and Vella when nominations closed last night.

Outgoing rector Juanito Camilleri, who will see his 10-year tenure come to an end in June, is viewed by some of his peers as a visionary, especially in the ICT sector.

Academics at the University of Malta are calling for less bureaucracy and for greater investment in research.
