The Nationalist Party is throwing back the Labour playbook at Joseph Muscat.

After the government side voted down a confidence motion filed by independent MP Marlene Farrugia against former energy minister Konrad Mizzi, caught up in the Panama Papers scandal after he opened an offshore company there, the PN has accused Joseph Muscat of heeding his own personal interest.

The prime minister has sought to reconsolidate his parliamentary group by not sacking Mizzi and retaining him as a minister without portfolio within the OPM, a demotion of sorts that still does not cut the mustard with civil society elements demanding that Mizzi resign his Cabinet position for hiding his offshore interests.

The upshot for the Nationalist Party: a smiling Muscat oblivious to the national outrage out there.

And indeed, an image redolent of Labour’s own send-up of Lawrence Gonzi, covering his ears and refusing to hear his own critics.
