Electoral Commission verifying validity of new voters added to register

In reaction to PN's accusations of irregularities, Electoral Commission maintains it is make all the necessary verifications for the eligibility of voters

The Electoral Commission today said it is making all the necessary verifications about cases of voters who allegedly acquired their right to vote through irregular means. The Electoral Commission stressed its endeavours to ensure the law is followed in every step of the way in its work.

The statement is a response to claims made yesterday by PN deputy leader Beppe Fenech Adami during a press conference where he said that the opposition had scrutinised a sample of the first 100 non-Maltese surnames in the electoral register and found 91 to have been in Malta less than the 6 month minimum residency requirement. This  is a violation of the constitutional requirements to acquire voting rights.

Fenech Adami has announced that the PN filed no less than 91 individual court cases about this issue that very morning, and that he would be summoning Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, the Electoral Commissioner and the CEO of Identity Malta as witnesses in the court cases, in order to explain themselves.
