Increased capacity for elderly residential care announced in Gozo

Public-private partnership agreement will increase the number of beds available for the elderly in Gozo to 40

Parliamentary Secretary Justyne Caruana has announced that government has reached an agreement with the private sector for the provision of residential care for the elderly in Gozo.

The announcement was made during a visit to Villa San Lawrenz in Gozo. Caruana, Parliamentary Secretary for Rights of Persons with Disability and Active Aging, announced that the agreement would increase the number of beds available for the elderly in Gozo to 40.

Caruana explained that the agreement was needed to address the increased demand for this service, which is expected to increase further due to Gozo's ageing population.

The system will operate in the same manner as in Malta, where applicants' individual situations are evaluated by a multidisciplinary team, in order to provide them with the care they required.

She reminded those present that the government had already introduced several measures to benefit the elderly in Gozo, from the inauguration of a respite service and a night shelter to centres for active aging and centres for persons suffering from dementia. Caruana said the success of these initiatives encouraged her to continue strengthening these services for elderly Gozitans.

Application forms for this service can be obtained by calling 2590 3175.
