Sliema Road, Gzira will be closed as from Friday

Sliema Road in Gzira, between Kappara roundabout and Triq il-Madonna tal-Ġebla, will be closed for a number of weeks from Friday. Vehicles will not be able to access Gzira from the Kappara junction.

  • Parking was removed from the lower part of Rue D’Argens; making it two-lane.
  • Triq ix-Xatt in Ta’ Xbiex is now two lanes towards Valletta.
  • Triq Abate Rigord towards Valletta will only be accessible for vehicles with eight persons or more.

Transport Malta has installed signs all over Malta to remind drivers of ongoing works in Kappara and to seek alternative routes.  On Friday, we will uncover diversion signs guiding drivers through the alternative routes.  The signs are marked with Kappara branding.

Online webcams, SMS notification

You can view the videos, google maps and other information on news.transport.gov.mt.

Website visitors can also view webcams showing Kappara roundabout and Triq Mikiel Anton Vassalli to monitor traffic in the area.

Visitors can opt to subscribe to the SMS and email notification service. They will also find a link to install the app Maltese Roads Traffic Updates app on their mobile device. The app will send notifications on ongoing works in Kappara.

Drivers can also consult the booklet distributed in their homes. “We strongly encourage drivers to use these tools to help them plan their journey,” Transport Malta said.

Alternative routes:

1. B’kara Bypass to San Gwann industrial estate

Drivers travelling towards Gzira from the South can avoid the area by going through Birkirkara Bypass to San Gwann Industrial Estate, through Triq Bellavista, towards Triq in-Naxxar, Triq Birkirkara St Julian’s and then towards Valletta or ira.

Otherwise they can keep going through Birkirkara Bypass, then through Triq Mikiel Anton Vassalli, towards ix-Xatt tal-Msida and then Rue D’Argens.

2. Towards Paceville tunnels and into San Gwann

From Regional Road and Sliema Road, it will be possible to travel towards Paceville Tunnels and proceed either through the slip road towards San Gwann and then to Triq Birkirkara or else to use the slip roads to travel back to regional road and use Triq Reggie Miller Gzira.

3. From St Julian’s into Gzira

Drivers travelling towards Gzira from the North can avoid Kappara by travelling from Pembroke through Manuel Dimech Bridge, take the slip road towards St Julian’s and then travel along ix-Xatt up to Gzira or proceed towards Valletta.

4. Towards Valletta

Those travelling towards Valletta must use ix-Xatt Ta’ Xbiex which will be 2 lanes direction Valletta only.

5. Kappara area

To reach the Kappara Area one must turn on Triq Reggie Miller and proceed towards Gzira via Rue D’Argens. Regional Road will remain open for vehicles travelling towards North and towards South, however flow will be limited due to ongoing works on the existing carriageway.  Speed limit is 30km/h.

Public Transport

As from tomorrow, Route 24 will exit onto Triq Mikiel Anton Vassalli from Triq Reggie Miller rather than from Sliema Road. The bus will not serve the bus stop in the latter road and the bus stop in Rue D’Argens.

Route X2 will however serve the bus stop in Rue D’Argens since the bus will keep going up Rue D’Argens and turn onto Reggie Miller before proceeding on its usual route.
