Maltese charity SOS Malta has launched an urgent appeal for donations for the victims of the earthquake that hit the centre of the country last in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The charity is already operating on the ground in Amatrice with sniffer dogs to assist in search and rescue operations.

The 6.2M earthquake has caused significant damage in central Italy, killing over 247 people and leaving hundreds other injured, while an unknown number of people remain trapped in the rubble.

“The town of Amatrice is in ruins. Survivors need access to emergency supplies like food, water, and medicine in addition to longer term recovery assistance,” SOS Malta said, adding that donations to this fund would exclusively support locally driven relief and recovery efforts from this disaster.

“We appeal to the Maltese public to help the affected people as they mourn their losses and begin to rebuild their lives. SOS Malta will channel the funds collected towards acute emergency relief and recovery assistance for the affected communities and the people who have lost homes and livelihoods.”

The charity added that members of the public can send donations to SOS Malta, 10, Triq il Ward, Sta Venera SVR 1640 or via SOS Malta Emergency Bank accounts: APS a/c 20000245111, HSBC a/c 006070932050, BOV a/c 40013974950

The group added that online donations could be made on:  http://www.sosmalta.org/donate_now
