The request for proposals for the creation of a Logistics Hub is in its final stages, economy minister Chris Cardona said.

Speaking at a press conference, Cardona said that a site had already been identified in Hal Far, but that the international call for entities willing to run the centre would soon be issued.

Cardona was meeting members of the Malta Chamber of Commerce established Logistics Business Committee, which was only a week old and intent on assisting the government in the setting up of the hub.

“The section reflects the good relationship and good will between the Chamber of Commerce and the government,” Cardona said praising the initiative to focus on logistics.

The section follows up on the government's wish to establish a logistics hub in Malta.

“The sector holds various advantages for the country,” he said, adding that the government also wanted to back the hub up with other initiatives to further consolidate the sector locally.

Cardona added that Malta Enterprise was currently undergoing a number of consultation processes to find ulterior location for the hub with the aim of making Malta one of the finest logistical centres in Europe.

“This industry can turn into one of the main pillars supporting economic growth locally,” Cardona said, adding that the country's stable locality and economy made maximising these advantages and maintaining the pace of economic growth essential.

Chairman Robert Aquilina said that the chamber had always been at the forefront of changes necessary to keep the economy strong and that it had recognised the need to invest in all possible options.

“We are in a situation where we can humbly offer up our recommendations for the sector,” he said, adding that logistics entailed many different dynamics.

The meeting went on behind closed doors.
