Environmental organisations focused on the environment will be getting a collective €50,000 in funding support from the government.

The scheme for voluntary organisations was launched this morning by environment minister José Herrera, intended to give environmental NGOs “a helping hand” in recognition of their work, as well as to incentivize more projects that would benefit the environment.

“It is another electoral pledge that the government is honouring,” Herrera said.

The fund will initially be allocated €50,000, with the potential to be extended if it is “a success” and if a number of viable projects have been proposed.

The fund will be administered by a committee composed of the ministry's director general of operations, a representative of the ministry's directorate for the environment and climate change, a representative from the Environment and Resources Authority, one from the Malta council for the voluntary sector and a representative from the office of the permanent secretary.
