"It is good to see so much space devoted to the various students' associations that promote positive activities ranging from literature to scientific societies, from environmental to equality to sports associations. It is good that Freshers' week promotes those organisations and activities that encourage more critical minds, free thought and physical exercise," he said.

Cassola commended the work done by student organisations and the impact they have on society.

"Involving oneself in a student organisation many times also means contributing to the general welfare of society, not only by creating awareness on particular issues, but also by taking part in direct actions which can benefit the weaker strata of society.”

Cassola added that such activity was needed in order to bring about changes in Malta.

“Student participation is a good antidote to the idea of materialistic commodification, which is quite prevailing in Maltese society nowadays."
