Flights diverted to Catania while MIA works on landing system

Pilots of three inbound flights thought the weather over was not favourable to land without an instrument landing system and diverted their flights to Catania

Work underway on the Instrument Landing System (ILS) at Malta International Airport led pilots of three inbound flights to decide to land in Catania on Wednesday.

In a statement, the ministry of tourism said it had instructed MIA and the Malta Air Traffic Services to report to it as to work being carried out and the diverted flights, and to keep it up to date with developments.

The ministry confirmed that MIA was carrying out some work on the ILS and that the pilots of the three flights had diverted to Catania after deciding that the weather conditions over Malta were not favourable to safe landings in the absence of the ILS.
