Opposition leader Simon Busuttil has called on party supporters to join the Nationalist Party in celebrating the Constitutional Court’s decision to award the party two additional seats in parliament.

“I urge party members and supporter to join us at Dar Centrali for a rally to celebrate this victory,” Busuttil said, during a press conference convened at the party’s headquarters.

During his comments, Busuttil said the government’s refusal to accept the PN’s claims for two additional seats had only served to deny the PN and the voters in the last election from their just representation in the country's highest body.

The Labour Party had appealed past court decisions, with the case ending up before the Constitutional Court. This final decision, the government said, will be respected.

Busuttil welcomed the Constitutional Court's decision in favour of the PN, which was now expecting the Electoral Commission to allocate the two seats as quickly as possible.

He said this was a victory for righteousness and praised legal counsel Paul Borg Olivier for driving the case and PN candidate Edwin Vassallo for his patience while the party fought to have the seats allocated.

Asked who would be elected on the second seat, Busuttil said that the party would follow “all procedures” and wait for the Electoral Commission’s decision.
