Almost a half of all restrooms within government buildings are now gender neutral, according to the civil liberties ministry.

The restrooms are found within all government buildings, including Parliament, all ministries and the Law Courts and are accessible to all persons. Moreover, the ministry said that 11% of these restrooms also cater for persons with disabilities.

The change is the result of a policy on gender neutral toilets that was introduced by the government earlier this year.

“Gender neutral toilets ensure privacy and eliminate discomfort for trans and gender variant persons, who often find themselves in uncomfortable situations when trying to access gender segregated toilets,” read a statement.

The ministry said that the aim of these restrooms is to ensure a non-judgemental or exclusive environment for all, adding that gender neutral spaces with nappy changing facilities are perfect for parents with babies or toddlers.
