Food imports from Ukraine seized due to virus risk

Foodstuffs and beverages from Ukraine destined for Malta have been seized by the authorities and will be destroyed

A quantity of products of animal origin, foodstuffs and beverages were sealed this morning in a joint operation performed by officials from the Environmental Health Directorate and the Veterinary Regulation Directorate together with Customs and VAT Department, assisted by the Police.

The food of animal origin is going to be destroyed in view of the potential risk of carrying the viruses present in Ukraine and that may cause potentially highly transmissible diseases to the Maltese livestock, the authorities said in a statement.

The products, destined for the local market, were found in a vehicle originating from Ukraine.  In a similar operation a few weeks ago, another consignment was sealed and referred back.

The competent authority of that country was informed accordingly.

“The Environmental Health Directorate and the Veterinary Regulation Directorate will be performing further inspections to ensure that food is transported in accordance with the current laws and regulations.”
