Union confederation calls on government to make public Air Malta situation

FOR.U.M. has requested a meeting with Tourism Minister Edward Zammit Lewis on the future of Air Malta and its workers

FOR.U.M. president Kevin Bonello has called on government to go public with information that can impinge on the future of Air Malta and its employees.

“The FOR.U.M. Unions Maltin is concerned about the lack of consultation with three of its affiliates members: the Association of Airline Engineers Malta (AAE), the Airline Pilots Association – Malta (ALPA) and the Union of Cabin Crew- Malta (UCC),” Bonello said.

He said, that the restructuring initiative of Air Malta and the results of discussions on a potential strategic partnership were being kept behind closed doors.

“During the past week, there were a number of reports in the local media about the failure of AirMalta to reach an agreement with Alitalia as a potential strategic partner,” Bonello said.

MaltaToday has reported that the deal with Alitalia fell through.

“This situation is creating uncertainty and unnecessary anxiety amongst employees that are concerned about their future prospects with Air Malta,” FOR.U.M. said.

On behalf of its affiliates, FOR.U.M. asked the to provide any information that can impinge on AirMalta employees and the airline’s future:

“Such information should be made immediately available and discussed with the Unions. It is imperative that immediate action is taken by government in order not to put at risk any jobs with the airline.”

Bonello said FOR.U.M. was requesting an urgent meeting with Tourism Minister Edward Zammit Lewis to seek clarifications on the future of Air Malta’s employees.
