Mizzi: Kappara project will be completed by end 2017

Transport Minister says that 40% of the project has been completed • Work will now commence on Gzira side

The Kappara junction project was on target, on budget and will be definitely completed by the end of the year, Transport Minister Joe Mizzi stated confidently on Friday.

“So far, 40% of the project has been completed, and we will now be proceeding to start installing utilities on the Gzira side and commencing some asphalting work,” he said.

Mizzi, who was speaking at a press conference called on site in Kappara, was accompanied by Pat Cox, European Coordinator for the TEN-T Scandinavian-Mediterranean Corridor.

The work on the project started in May 2016 and is estimated to cost €23 million, with an additional €3 million spent on property expropriation and traffic management.

Mizzi said that, upon completion of the Kappara project at the end of 2017, work would immediately start on the Marsa project.

He said the Kappara project would help alleviate traffic congestion in the north harbour region while at the same time diverting car-flow away from residents in the area.

Cox praised Mizzi and his team for the vision and plan they had adopted with regards to traffic in Malta.

“Malta’s requests for funds for the Kappara and Marsa were successful, and the EU will in fact fund €39 million for the works in Marsa and Addolorata area,” he said. “Phase one of this project has already been approved and we look forward to approval for phase 2 as well.”
