Magistrate Saviour Demicoli passes away, aged 60

Saviour Demicoli had been working as magistrate in the Maltese courts since 1994 

Long-standing magistrate Saviour Demicoli has passed away at the age of 60, justice minister Owen Bonnici has confirmed.

Demicoli, who has been magistrate since 1994, had been battling an illness, MaltaToday is informed.

"He was an extraordinary person: kind, honest and just," Bonnici said in a tweet. 

Demicoli was born in February of 1956, obtained his Diploma of Notary Public from the University of Malta in 1982 and graduated as Doctor of Laws two years later.

He was called to the Bar in 1984 and after a brief period of private practice was appointed as a judicial assistant with the Superior Courts. He was appointed as magistrate in 1994.

Demicoli had lectured in criminology at the Malta Police Academy and in EU justice laws at the University of Malta. He also served as an external examiner and external tutor in criminal law and European law at the Faculty of Laws.
