Six associations related to the Maltese language have welcomed the amendments to the Maltese Language Act, which will see a shift in the structure of the National Council of the Maltese Language, according to a joint statement.

The Department of Maltese at the University of Malta, the Department of Maltese at Junior College, the Institute of Linguistics, l-Għaqda tal-Malti, l-Għaqda tal-Qarrejja tal-Provi, and the Academy for the Maltese Language expressed their contentment with the amendments and the consequences they will have on the Council.

“We are convinced that the amendments as approved will strengthen the National Council for the Maltese Language because they ensure that there will be more representation, wider consultation and more effective implementation,” the statement read.

The associations confirmed that the Council’s memberships will grow from 11 to 15.

Together with representatives from the Academy of the Maltese Language, the Department of Maltese within the University, the Directorate of Education, the Malta Arts Council and the Institute of Journalists, the Council will now also include representatives from the Department of Translation within the University, the Broadcasting Authority, Maltese publishers, Maltese teachers and Maltese translators working in EU institutions.
