[WATCH] How to save a biker’s life

Motorbikes account to just 6% of registered vehicles in Malta, and yet, 40% of fatalities during 2016 were riders: here’s what you can do

Eyes on the road for riders: raising awareness on dangers on the road

Last year, nine riders lost their lives marking 40% of fatalities for 2016.

According to 2016 data, motorbikes mark just 6% of vehicles registered in Malta, yet one of every three who are grievously injured in a traffic accident is a rider.

A new campaign by Transport Malta and the Malta Road Safety Council aims to raise awareness on dangers riders face on the road.

“The aim of the campaign is two-fold: it addresses riders on one side and drivers on the other.  It asks riders to be wary and be prepared for the unexpected, to wear protective clothing and not to over speed.  The campaign addresses drivers as well.  Bikers and riders are harder to spot and are far more vulnerable.  Hence the campaign asks drivers to be on the lookout and keep their distance,” the transport watchdog said.

Transport Malta said it was also committed to improve its design of future infrastructure in order to cater for motorbikes and bicycles.

Transport Malta introduced motorcycle strips in Malta for the first time during the implementation of the Coast Road.
