Barricades are to be installed on the centre strip of Triq Nazzjonali, Floriana in front of Bieb il-Bombi, to prevent pedestrians from perilously crossing multiple lanes of traffic to get to the other side of the road, according to Transport Malta.

“Despite the appropriately built subway, numerous pedestrians opt to perilously cross multiple lanes. Transport Malta’s intervention is designed to reduce the risk of accidents in one of the busiest roads in Malta,” said the transport authority in a statement.

It added that ministry officials were cleaning the subway each day and that security cameras had also been installed to “help improve safety for users”.

Moreover, Transport Malta urged drivers to be alert and to follow the instructions of officials on site for the safety of workers. It added that works will commence on Monday and will last all week.

Transport Malta said that the road will not be closed, and work will be carried out between 20.00pm and 03.00am to minimise disruption to traffic
