Religious marriages down by 20% since 2010

The total number of marriages increased by roughly 15%, with civil marriages making up the difference

The number of religious marriages registered in Malta has fallen from 1740 in 2010 to 1392 in 2016, a 20% reduction, according to data tabled in parliament.

During the same period, the number of civil marriages increased from 785 to 1524, an increase of almost 95%. Total marriages increased from 2525 to 2916 or 15%

The information was tabled by justice minister Owen Bonnici in response to a parliament question put to him by Nationalist MP Chris Said.
