GWU defends revenge porn victims

GWU has said the union took all the necessary steps to ensure that the two people involved do not face repercussions with their employer

The General Workers’ Union has defended two young people on their workplace after a home-made video of them appearing to participate in sexual activity was reportedly stolen from a phone during repair and circulated on social media without their consent.

GWU section president for public entities Jeremy Camilleri said that the union took all the necessary steps to ensure that the two people involved, both employees of MaltaPost, do not face repercussions with their employer, thanking MaltaPost for understanding that the situation was beyond the control of the employees.

In a separate statement, MaltaPost said that the incident was being treated with the utmost respect towards the rights and confidentiality of those involved.

“MaltaPost invariably ensures that such situations concerning its staff members are given full attention. The company is informed that investigations are being carried out by the Police authorities and consequently these should be allowed take their course. The public will understand that MaltaPost is itself altogether extraneous to the incident," it said.

GWU strongly condemned the actions of those who leaked the video, who have yet to be identified by police conducting the investigation.

“GWU feels that the way in which the video was spread on social media show a lack of professionalism from the person who was obliged to protect the privacy of these people,” the union said in a statement. “This is a clear case of negligence and lack of awareness of the consequences that can engulf those involved. The reality is that the people in the video have been victimized by this shameless individual.”
