A new community home for people with disabilities has been opened in Kalkara. The apartment, close to the coast in Triq il-Luzzu, will house six people aged between 45 and 68 years old.

The house - called Dar l'Abilita' - is composed of three en suite bedrooms, a spacious kitchen and living room and a main bathroom. It will be a semi-independent home, meaning that while residents will be encouraged to live as independently as possible, a care worker will be on site on a 24/7 basis.

Parliamentary secretary for people with disabilities Justyne Caruana, who opened the home, said that it cost around €600,000 to build and furnish. It is the fifth such house to be opened as part of the ‘Progett Socjeta Gusta’ scheme – following similar projects in Zurrieq, Siggiewi and Gozo (two houses). A further five community homes are in the pipeline and are expected to be launched within the coming weeks.
