The opposition is demanding the government to explain how drug consumption inside the prison walls appear to have increased, with 14 cases of overdose reported in seven weeks – an average of two cases a week.

The Times of Malta today reported that synthetic drugs are becoming “very common” at the Corradino Correctional Facility with prison authorities reportedly at a loss on how to prevent more drugs entering the facility.

According to the newspaper, the overdoses did not lead to any deaths; several were treated at the clinic while others were taken to hospital for further treatment.

PN spokesperson for home affairs Beppe Fenech Adami said the responsible authorities had a responsibility to explain how drugs have become increasingly available inside CCF.

“Prisoners and their relatives have a right to know that CCF residents are not at risk of falling victims to drug abuse. Whoever is behind the supply of the illegal substance must be caught,” Fenech Adami said.

Fenech Adami went on to add that Home Affairs Minister Michael Farrugia must explain how the situation deteriorated so quickly in a few weeks.

“What should be a correctional facility has become destructive,” the outgoing PN deputy leader added.
