The Malta Union of Teachers announced today that Carmen Dimech was appointed as its new general secretary.

MUT president Marco Bonnici welcomed Dimech to the post and said he looked forward to immediately start working on several issues, including pending agreements and individual member issues.

“[Dimech’s] vast experience will certainly be an asset at this crucial time,” Bonnici said.

Dimech has served on the MUT Council for fifteen years and has also contributed in different Union committees and roles throughout the years. Her work include a 38-year contribution to the church school sector, ranging form serving as guidance teacher for 18 years to another eight years as PSCD and Guidance Head of Department within the Secretariat for Catholic Education.

Bonnici added that Dimech’s appointment marked a number of firsts in the long history of the Union, including first woman General Secretary.

Dimech’s appointement, Bonnici said, also brought the number of full-time female Union officials to two out of four, marking full gender equality without any need for quotas. “This augurs well especially since the workforce in the educational sector is in good part female and therefore this will be reflected in Union representation."

Other appointments included Elaine Germani as the new Vice President, who joined Bonnici as President and Norman Grech as Senior Vice-President.

Germani taught physics and integrated science for 15 years and is an elected member of the Council for the Teaching Profession. She also worked with a team of science teachers in the setting up of the Maltese Association of Science Educators, having a seat in the committee ever since. Germani has been an MUT Council members for the past nine years.
