Parliamentary Secretary Clint Camilleri attended an Animal Awareness Day activity organised by Nisget Artna at Ghammieri Farm this morning, where he expressed his appreciation for the extensive work carried out by various NGOs in regards to animal welfare.

Camilleri said that it is due to the love and determination of the volunteers, coupled with the endeavours of the Animal Welfare Directorate, that a significant number of animals are receiving the protection they require, while emphasising that the government was focused on "increasing its efforts towards the protection of animals"

Animal Welfare tackles 5,000 requests for aid per year and carries out over 1,000 inspections that result from reports, said a statement by the secretariat.

The Director of Animal Welfare, Noel Montebello, said that one of the most important parts of the job is to find shelter for the animals which are picked up. The Directorate has aggrandised its campaign in regards to adoption of cats and dogs.

In fact, the Animal Awareness Day activity provided the opportunity for attendees to adopt a cat or dog.

“This process will take place in conjunction with other NGOs, so that due diligence is exercised in regards to where the animals are going,” Montebello explained. “Adoptions are all free of charge for both cats and dogs, all of which are chipped, and spayed or neutered”.
