General Workers' Union says a historic opportunity to rally for national unity was lost when Sunday's demonstration demanding justice for Daphne Caruana Galizia turned into 'a partisan political protest'

The General Workers' Union has condemned what it described as a transformation of Sunday's demonstration into a "partisan political protest" despite having been advertised as a manifestation for national unity to demand justice for slain journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.

In a statement this afternoon, the GWU said it had accepted the invite to attend a manifestation that was intended to send out a message of national unity against the stifling of freedom of expression.

"With indignation, the GWU notes that despite all assurances given... the demonstration turned into a political attack. This attitude showed serious disrespect to those who genuinely accepted the invite because they believed in national unity and who felt unity was more important than partisan politics," the union said.
The GWU said this was a lost opportunity to present a united front.

A similar sentiment was expressed by a member of pressure group Moviment Graffitti, Andre Callus, on a Facebook post where he claims that the Cvil Society Network group is “a front for the Nationalist Party, created specifically with the aim of furthering the PN agenda.”
