Registered unemployment falls by 22.9% since 2016

The number of people registered for work stood at 2,472 in September 2017, decreasing by 22.9 per cent when compared to the same month last year

NSO said that registered unemployment has dropped by 22.9% this September when compared to the same month last year.

Data provided by Jobsplus showed that registered male unemployment dropped among all age groups, while registered female unemployment increased among those younger than 20, the NSO said.

Compared to September 2016, registrants for work decreased irrespective of how long they had been registered. The only recorded increase was among females registered for over one year, while the largest decrease was among people who had been registered for less than 21 weeks.

The number of people with a disability registered for work stood at 290, dropping by 85 when compared to last year. 76.6% of registrants with a disability were men.  

Most men and women on the unemployment register sought occupations as clerical support workers, with 19.5% and 37.3% respectively.

The registered unemployment rate in March stood at 1.4% of the labour supply, excluding part-time employment, and varied from 1.6% among men and 1% among women.
