The Civil Society Network (CSN) has called on the Maltese authorities, with specific reference to the Police and the Attorney General, to provide all the necessary protection required to anyone who may possess information, or is active against criminality.

In a statement, the NGO said that such individuals were being exposed to risks on their lives and that of their families.

“Such protection should also be given to those politicians and members of the judiciary who are involved in investigations related to the allegations made by Daphne Caruana Galizia,” said CSN.

Following Caruan Galizia’s assassination, the group said that “Maltese government institutions” had defended themselves against accusations of “failing to prevent the said murder by stating that Caruana Galiza did not want police protection”.

“Civil Society Network notes that Maltese and International press have reported in the pas days that both whistleblower Maria Efimova as well as ex-Police Inspector and FIAU official Jonathan Ferris stated that they feel their lives are in danger, in view of the fact that they have information related to criminal activities related to Malta, as well as the fact that they refused to remain silent on criminal activities,” read the statement.

The group reiterated its view, that the country needed stronger and unequivocal commitment towards the rule of law,

The Civil Society Network will be holding a “demonstration for justice” on 3 December that will be addressed by Italian former anti-corruption magistrate Antonio Di Pietro.
